Hong Kong Youth and Mental Health by Wong Ka Wai Jane
Given the significance and prevalence of mental health issues among youths in Hong Kong, the growing concern has sparked a lot of discussions in the local community. The video segment targeting parents aims to shed light on the impact of parental and societal expectations on children at a young age, which had taken a toll on them, leading to increased vulnerability and mental health issues. It seeks to emphasize the need for parents to be aware of the potential consequences of placing excessive pressure on their children.
Since parents are often viewed as significant role models by children, their goals and aspirations are greatly shaped by parental influence from an early age. Growing up in a highly competitive concrete jungle, the over-demanding education system and high academic expectations have contributed to a substantial surge in mental health problems among youths. Recent reports on 22 teenage suicidal attempts and deaths over the past 3 months have highlighted the utmost importance of prioritising the mental well-being of youngsters (Yu, 2023). Since youngsters are future pillars of society, cultivating a proper definition of success other than academic achievements and social status is crucial, yet the
right parental guidance can be done to sustain a healthy environment.
