Hong Kong’s Education Inequality by Yiu Wing Cheung Sam

The title of this video is “Hong Kong’s Education Inequality." Education plays a crucial role in facilitating upward social mobility for low-income individuals. However, students from disadvantaged backgrounds face limited access to resources necessary for education, unlike their affluent counterparts. According to the Census and Statistics Department (2020), the number of post-intervention poor children and the child poverty rate were recorded at 85,900 and 8.4%, respectively. Using the pre-intervention statistics, the number of poor children and the poverty rate would increase to 274 900 and 27.0%, respectively, in 2020. These statistics reveal a significant disparity in educational opportunities based on socioeconomic status. In 2011, only 36.6% of low-income teenagers had a college degree, compared to 85.5% of those from higher-income families. This stark contrast emphasizes the limited chances for higher education among students from low-income families, ultimately hindering their prospects for social progress in Hong Kong.
